The Tale of this Tea:

Great Heart and the Three Tests A First Nation Folktale from Canada

There was the son of a great hunter who grew up to be incredibly strong and good looking, and subsequently very vain. His mother told him that the fairies had blessed him with special gifts when he was born. When he was a young man word came of a beautiful young woman, the daughter of a powerful chief, who was seeking a husband but she was guarded by an old woman who imposed challenges of severe feats of skill on all suitors. The lad was not daunted and he set out on this quest calling himself the Lad of the Great Heart. On his way he met a number of companions with particular skills, who joined him on his journey. The first was the Scarlet Runner, who could run faster than anything else on earth. The second was the the Man of Great Thirst, who could drink vast amounts of liquid. The next, Far-Darter, who could fire an arrow as far as he wished. The last was Keen Ears, who could hear anything and everything. They continued together until they found the place where the young woman lived, there they met the old woman who set them the challenges. The first test was to move an enormous boulder that blocked the sunlight from the young woman’s window. Great Heart moved the boulder with his powerful strength. The next challenge was to consume a gigantic feast of food and huge quantity of drink. The companions easily ate the food and the Man of Great Thirst downed barrel after barrel of water until it was all gone. The final test was to run a race against a champion who had never been beaten, this of course fell to the Scarlet Runner. They set off but once they were out of sight of the village the champion tricked the Scarlet Runner into stopping for a nap. The others saw the champion returning but no sign of the Scarlet Runner. Keen Ears listened at the ground and heard the Scarlet Runner snoring, then Far-Darter fired an arrow that skimmed the nose of the Scarlet Runner and woke him up. He set off running again filled with rage that he had been tricked which made him run all the faster and he won the race. Great Heart and the young woman were married and the companions were all rewarded with treasure and they were friends for evermore. There are versions of this story found in many cultures.
