The Tale of this Tea: The Golden Apples of Hesperides

A Story from Ancient Greece

When Zeus and Hera were wed they were given a gift from Gaia of a tree that bore golden apples; these apples have the qualities of renewal. Hera treasured this tree so much that she planted it in a opulent garden that lay beyond the gates of the world, guarded by the Hesperides, these were the daughters of Hesperus and Atlas.

One of the impossible tasks that was set to Heracles was to steal three golden apples from this tree and bring them to Eurystheus. Heracles learned the location of the garden after grappling with the Nereus, god of the sea.

After a very long and arduous journey Heracles finally found the enchanted island beyond the gates of the world where the garden of Hera grew. The Hesperides there told Heracles that he had to defeat the guardian of the tree if he were to take any apples. The guardian was a huge and ferocious snake. Heracles was nearly defeated by this monstrous creature but eventually he overcame the snake and it lay dead on the ground. Heracles took the three golden apples and returned to Eurystheus. Eurystheus was amazed that Heracles had survived and told him to keep the apples. Heracles took the golden apples to Athene, the goddess of war, as a gift and to ask her for help with his next quest.
